It’s easy to get caught up in teaching the how of martial arts, the stances, the strikes, the kicks. But one thing that often gets overlooked is the where.

Every technique is designed for a purpose, and that purpose only comes alive when your students understand where to aim.

Because in real martial arts, precision matters, hitting the wrong target means wasted movement.

Why “Technique Without Target” Is a Common Teaching Trap

Many martial artists train with good form and solid power, but without clear target awareness.

The problem?

Most parts of the human body are naturally protected.

The bones, muscles, and “armour” of the body absorb impact, reducing the effectiveness of a strike.

If we don’t teach students why and where to hit, they end up memorizing moves instead of mastering martial arts.

As coaches, it’s our responsibility to help them understand effectiveness, not just execution.

The Human Body’s Natural Armour

Think about it:

  • The shoulders, upper arms, thighs, and shins are strong, dense areas designed to take impact.

  • These are not effective striking zones if the goal is to control, subdue, or defend efficiently.

  • Hitting these “armoured” parts might look strong, but they often achieve little result.

When students rely only on force, they mistake effort for effectiveness.

The Center Line: Simple Targeting

If there’s one principle every martial artist should know, it’s the center line.

The center line runs vertically down the middle of the body and holds some of the most sensitive and responsive targets:

  • Nose & Under Nose: Disrupts balance and vision instantly.

  • Throat: Controls breath and structure.

  • Solar Plexus: Shuts down movement through the nervous system.

  • Groin: Disrupts control and focus instantly.

These are natural, accessible points that can be targeted with precision, not force.

Additional Targets

Beyond the center line, there are additional targets, but also highly effective areas:

  • Temple & Behind the Ear: Disrupt equilibrium.

  • Liver & Spleen: Affect internal response and body control.

  • Knees: Limit mobility and stance integrity.

Understanding these zones transforms a technique from choreography into strategy.

Teaching Students to Strike With Intention

The key isn’t to make students more aggressive, it’s to make them more aware.

When they know where to aim, every technique becomes more purposeful.

Their movements become cleaner, sharper, and smarter.

They start to see martial arts not just as movement, but as mastery of cause and effect.

That’s where true skill develops, through intention, not imitation.

Final Thoughts:

As martial arts coaches, we’re not just teaching strikes.

We’re teaching awareness, discipline, and respect for energy.

When students understand the why behind the what, they stop chasing power, and start mastering precision.

Because in martial arts, effectiveness always beats effort.
