The Hidden Key to Higher Kicks (Why Flexibility Alone Isn’t Enough)

If you’ve ever looked at someone throwing a beautiful high kick and thought, “I wish I could do that”.

You’re not alone.

Whether you’re training martial arts, want to improve your flexibility, or you just want to feel stronger and more confident in your body, being able to kick higher isn’t about genetics or being born flexible.

It’s about mobility.

Most people stretch endlessly and wonder why their kicks never improve.

But stretching alone isn’t the answer.

To kick higher, you need to train your joints and muscles to move freely and stay strong throughout that range of motion.

That’s where mobility drills come in.

Why Mobility Matters for Higher Kicks

Think about it:

  • If your hips are tight, your leg will always hit a “block” before it can rise.

  • If your glutes, hamstrings, or core aren’t strong enough, your leg will feel heavy, and you’ll lose balance.

  • If you only train flexibility without mobility, you’ll feel loose but not controlled, and that’s how injuries happen.

Mobility is the bridge between flexibility and strength.

When you train it properly, your body unlocks higher ranges of motion that you can actually use in real kicks.

Common Myths About High Kicks

When people struggle with higher kicks, they usually believe one of these myths:

“I just need to stretch more.”
Truth: Over-stretching without mobility leads to instability and injury.

“I’m too old to improve.”
Truth: I’ve seen 50 and 60-year-olds increase their kicking height dramatically with consistent mobility training.

“High kicks are only for advanced martial artists.”
Truth: Anyone can improve their kicking height, no matter their level or background.

Mobility drills give you a new opportunity, they unlock your body’s natural potential without hours of static stretching.

The 7 Mobility Drills for Higher Kicks

In my latest YouTube video, I share 7 simple but powerful mobility drills that have helped me and my students kick higher without pain. These are suitable for beginners all the way to advanced martial artists.

Each drill is designed to wake up the muscles around your hips, build balance, and unlock more height in your kicks.

How to Use These Drills

Here’s how I recommend using these 7 drills:

  • Warm-up: Do 2–3 drills before training to open up your hips.

  • Cool-down: Use the slower, controlled drills to reinforce flexibility.

  • Standalone practice: Dedicate 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times a week, for long-term results.

Remember, the goal isn’t just to touch your toes or split your legs — it’s to move better, feel stronger, and kick higher with confidence.
